Professional Resume ServiceResume Australia appreciate that Australians have funny accents, live with a lot of the deadliest creepy crawlies in the world, and that the water in their sinks and toilets goes down the wrong way.  It’s no wonder resumes in Australia are different too.

Resume Australia are here to ensure that you put your best foot forward when applying for jobs in Australia, and that you met the expectations of Australian employers as well as compete effectively against local residents.

Resume Australia have identified some key differences in Australian resumes, as compared to the rest of the world, such as the following:

  • A resume in Australia generally does not contain a photograph
  • A resume in Australia is usually 3-4 pages in length
  • A resume in Australia does not contain much personal information

A Resume in Australia Does Not Contain Photographs

Where you’re from, it may be expected that you would have a photograph of yourself on your resume.  However, Resume Australia is here to report that in Australia, this is considered a big “no-no”.

That’s right.  If you apply for jobs in Australia with your photograph on your resume, this can often go against your application, and may put your resume at the bottom of the pile.

There are some exceptions to this rule – for example, in the modelling industry, your appearance is very important to your job.  In fact, your appearance plays a huge factor, because models are hired on their looks.  Therefore, to effectively apply for a job as a model in Australia, you would need to include your photograph.

However, your Project Manager resume, Accountant resume, Programmer Resume or Network Engineer resume does not need to include your photograph, because your appearance does not affect the way you actually perform your job.  Right?

Resume Austraila would also like to point out that in Australia, the people are protected by Anti-Discrimination Laws, which means that legally, employers cannot demand for you to include a photograph with your resume.  Further, you would be protecting yourself from discrimination if you did not include your photograph on your Australian resume.

A Resume in Australia is 3-4 Pages Long

In many other countries of the world, resumes are squished into the least amount of pages as possible, a such as in the US and Canada, where it is expected to have a resume no longer than 2 pages, and even then it is too long.

At the other end of the extreme, there is no limit to the number of pages a resume can be in South Africa, where it is quite common for a professional of 10-20 years experience to have a resume that is 12 pages long.  Seriously!

Resume Australia advises that in Australia, both of these types of resumes would be off-putting to Australian employers.

That means that your 1-2 page resume will come across in Australia as though you do not have much to offer.

That also means that your 12 page resume will cause Australian employers to yawn, and push your lengthy resume aside, as it is too much effort to go through.

Therefore, Resume Australia’s advice is to meet Australian employer’s expectations, so that you can increase your opportunity of being invited for an interview, and hopefully, being offered a job.

In Australia, your resume is expected to be on average, 3-4 pages long.  This is a very good lenght to offer just enough information for the Australian employer to make an informed decision on whether they would like to invite you for an interview.  If your CV is less, there may be too many “grey” areas for the Australian employer, which could cause them to reject your application.  On the other hand, if your resume is too long, it could cause the Australian employer to reject your resume out of frustration of too much information to cipher through.

A Resume in Australia Has Minimal Personal Information

In your country of residence, it is common to include personal information such as your marital status, date of birth, number of children, occupation of spouse, gender, religious affiliation, colour or race?

Resume Australia has served several clients from overseas who include this information on their resume, and their advice is as follows: DO NOT INCLUDE THIS INFORMATION.

There are a couple of reasons why you should not include this information.  The first reason is, because the information is irrelevant to your performance in the job you are applying for.  Whether you are married or not, does not determine your ability to perform as a Structural Engineer.  If you have the necessary qualifications and experience, your religious affiliation should have no affect on how effectively you can perform your duties as a Dentist.  Do you understand our point?

Another reason this information should not be included on your Australian resume is because due to the Anti-Discrimination Laws in Australia that are there to protect you, it woiuld be illegal for an Australian employer to demand this information from you.

Third, including this information on your Australian resume will take up valuable space that you could use to really sell your skills and experience!  Use your resume to your best advantage when applying for jobs in Australia, and only include information that will help Australian employers to best decide whether you are suitable for the job they are looking to fill.
